About Syria

The Syrian Arab Republic is a sovereign state in the Middle East, located in the western part of Asia on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Since the end of 2014, Syria has been undergoing a pivotal historical transformation, striving to build a new state based on the principles of freedom, justice, and open economic partnership with the world.

Location and Geography

Syria is located in Western Asia, bordered by Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south, Lebanon and the Mediterranean Sea to the west, and Palestine to the southwest. It enjoys an exceptionally strategic geographical location, making it a natural crossroads for trade between Europe, Asia, and Africa.

Syria's terrain is remarkably diverse, encompassing the Mediterranean coast in the west, the western mountains such as the coastal and Qalamoun Mountains, and the fertile interior plains like the Hauran and Jazira plains, as well as the Syrian Desert extending eastward into Iraq. The Euphrates River flows through Syria from northeast to southeast, passing through Deir ez-Zor Governorate.

Syria has an area of 185,180 square kilometers.

Syria’s population is estimated at around 22 million according to the 2010 census, with large numbers of Syrian expatriates scattered around the world looking to return and contribute to reconstruction.

Economy

Syria has a diversified economy encompassing agriculture, industry, tourism, oil and gas, and trade. Since 2025, the transitional government has been working to launch a comprehensive reconstruction phase, opening investment opportunities to both domestic and foreign capital, and creating a competitive and attractive business environment following the gradual lifting of international sanctions.

Currency

The Syrian pound is currently the subject of government efforts to achieve monetary stability and reform the banking system within the framework of the comprehensive economic reform plan.

National Day, Revolution and Victory Day

Syria’s National Day is celebrated on April 17th of each year, commemorating the evacuation and withdrawal of the last foreign soldier from Syrian territory in 1946.

The anniversary of the Syrian revolution, which began on March 18, 2011, is also celebrated.

And also in celebration of the victory achieved on December 8, 2024.
